News and stuff

The WOGA Classic has taken place. The Texas Dreams girls did not compete, which drastically lowered the amount of serious competition. They are being paced for camp later this month. Katelyn Ohashi did not compete floor, and vaulted an FTY. Probably a very wise decision this early in the year though it makes me think there's not a hope she will be the second AA spot at SCAM. She did compete a very ambitious beam, with numerous issues which hopefully will be ironed out. It did not have a dance series, the layout full needs to be replaced with a tuck version, and nothing was connected..so the score while it is too high, also reflects the monster d-score..in and around 6.5 to 6.7 for the routine shown, which can hit mid 7's in full. Similarly, her bars are a bit problematic too, the Healy turn is not working for her and is not worth doing if it remains like that. I really like Katelyn and hope she can be paced correctly this quad. Mariya Livchikova was second AA behind Abigail Milliet. Abigail is one of those elites you never hear much about, but she had pretty decent scores here. She was rumoured to be training an amanar but with a score of 15 on vault, I'm not sure if she did a very good DTY or a rough amanar. I'm inclined to go for the former, as overscoring was definitely evident at this meet. Really looking forward to seeing Mariya's beam and floor especially, though she did fall on beam. Krystyna only competed bars. Katelyn's beam is here and her bars are here. Senior results can be seen here.

Jordan Chiles missed qualifying elite by a tiny fraction, as she fell off bars. Seeing as she is 4 years off being a senior, this is far from a calamity, though dissapointing for her of course. She is very strong on all 4 events so if she avoids a fall in future there's pretty much no doubt she'll make it. Really looking forward to seeing her routines, I saw a beautifully clean DTY video recently. Pixie Brock, the girl in blue who was given short shrift in the MLT documentary, failed to qualify elite as did Alyona Shchennikova, Polina's sister. Madison Kocian managed it. There isn't a full list yet so I'm unsure if Irina Alexeeva qualified. She is even younger than Jordan by virtue of not turning senior until 2018 so again, plenty of time. She competed in the junior elite ranks later on in the day but seeing as she is from WOGA that isn't a chrystal clear indication..rules can be bent when it's your gym. Edit- Irina qualified elite! Well done to her. She just did beam and floor after doing the AA earlier, managing the highest scores on both events. I LOVE her beam. Seven juniors competed AA, with Meredith Sylvia of Parkettes in first. Laurie Hernandez counted a fall on bars and was second. Polina Shchennikova seems to have had a rough time on beam, coming in fourth. Full results are here. Irina's qualifying routines are here.

Russia have pulled out of Jesolo. This is a bit of a blow both as an opportunity to see a wide range of seniors and juniors and as a means of seeing them face off against USA which they now won't be doing until worlds and then only individually, but it does make sense that they don't want to wear their gymnasts out this early in the quad. They have quite a bit on their plate- Russian Championships at the beginning of next month, the LRSY (Bercy) World Cup in the middle of March which has Aliya Mustafina, Ksenia Afanasyeva and Maria Paseka on its roster, and then Euros towards the end of April. Anna Rodionova is injured and won't be at Championships. She competed watered down routines with a cast recently..a leg injury, not sure if it was sustained when she fell on her Pak on bars at Stuttgart late last year or if it's unrelated. Also missing will be Viktoria Komova of course, though prognosis on her seems to be better than expected. Edit- Aliya has pulled out of LRSY. Paseka and Afan are still on the roster. I was looking forward to seeing a new floor from her- even just with back layout passes- but still there's a few opportunities to see her before summer so whatever keeps her healthy and paced correctly. I noticed Diana Chelaru is not on the roster anymore in the last update, but hadn't seen the February 14th update. It's here.

Elena Zamolodchikova has reportedly suffered a heart attack. She has been dealing with a lot of stress- the closing down of her gym, move to another multi-sports facility and friction there. She appears to stand accused of physically beating other coaches (??!!). The translations are pretty bad, but it appears that she has been released, still feeling weak, and will be observed until Wednesday. It is entirely blamed on the stress she has been under. Edit: It's been said on IG forums that a fluff piece stated she had a minor heart condition, which would make this attack at such a young age all the more likely. I'm waiting for a decent translation to fill in the gaps but you can read/translate the original article here.

While it's obvious that Oksana Chusovitina has not retired given her recent participation in meets, the latest news is that she plans to compete for Uzbekistan in Rio. This would be her 7th Olympics, and if she makes it to 2016, her 25th year competing as a senior elite. WOW. Oksana has said before that she wanted to focus on coaching the Uzbek team, which presumably she will combine with her own training. While she has German nationality from moving there for her son's treatment, Uzbekistan is her native country so presumably she has dual nationality and won't have to jump through hoops to be elegible. Wishing this incredibly inspirational athlete the best of luck. She really deserves to be recognised outside of her own sport..it's quite a bit different to someone competing that long in a sport like archery or equestrian..

USAG just posted a short interview with Kyla Ross. She talks about focusing on her all-around potential and her goals of performing strongly at SCAM and Nationals. There's footage of her on all four events at camp, though vault and floor are just warm-ups. She looks nice and sharp on bars, good to see.

I posted this 10 minutes after USAG uploaded it. Delighted this morning to wake up to ones with Lexie Priessman, Katelyn Ohashi and Simone Biles. Hopefully a Maddie Desch one too. Obviously Kyla is already a senior, the rest are new to the scene. You can see the others here.

The Nadia Comaneci International Invitational was won by Victoria Moors in the senior category and Rebeca Andrade in the junior category. I thought this was a Level 10 meet when I heard about it a while ago, so very happy to discover some great names competing. Another favourite is 2000- born Romanian Asiana Peng who is very clean and artistic on beam and floor. Routines have been uploaded here. The highlight is Victoria Moors on floor. So great to see her right back on form after an off day at the recent Canadian Nationals. Love the choreography right in the middle, and the turn before her last pass. Although she is an extremely worthy floor medal winner she needs a good bit more difficulty to contend, but I'm glad she isn't being overworked when she's not long back from a mild injury. Rebeca Andrade is once again extremely impressive on beam and floor, super height on everything. Nice to see she's keeping it easy though. Bars are her nemesis and she did not do her Comaneci- a shame considering the meet. Asiana Peng has a lovely sprightly floor and nice swing on bars. Plenty of time for the two of them to develop on bars yet.

The Tokyo World Cup roster has been released. (C'mon Jesolo!!). It's a nice mix and I'm most excited to see Asuka Teramoto, Elisa Meneghini and Shang Chunsong. Elisa is a brand new Italian senior who isn't far behind Enus Mariani in terms of promise. (Speaking of Enus, there's a dance run-through of her new floor routine and it's amazing! Epic, dramatic music and she really sell it.) I'm a bit dissapointed to see Huang Qiushuang because although I love her expression on floor and she can display gorgeous work elsewhere...I feel like she has had endless opportunities often with dissapointing results and that it's time to push Zeng Siqi, Huang Huidan and Wu Liufang forward for the international experience they need. Elsabeth Black recently had an extrememly dominant performance at Canadian Nationals, so she should be strong competition. Somehow I am not suprised to see Vanessa Ferrari on the roster as she is competing like a maniac saving up for a house..hopefully a mansion at this stage, she deserves it. I haven't seen much at all of Charlie Fellows so I'm looking forward to her. And last but not least...an unnamed American! Very exciting stuff and it's nice to see them participating in a greater number of international meets. February camp should be very interesting, names for SCAM, Jesolo, the Germany meet and now this, not to mention the much depleted Junior National team. I've named all the girls for the Tokyo Cup but you can see the roster and for MAG too here.

TCG have confirmed the Japanese lineup for Jesolo and coupled with the source on weibo, I'll take that! I'm SO EXCITED to see Asuka Teramoto who is definitely making up for missing competitions with a minor injury last year, Mai Murakami as always, not so much new skills from her as it's very early..but consistency, the cleanest bars worker I've seen in a long time- Wakana Inoue, the girl with the layout full beam mount- Natsumi Sasada who has been missing in action for quite a while and Waikiko Ryu who I haven't seen much of. Superb lineup. They are also sending five juniors and as their juniors are completely unknown to me, an excellent opportunity to see what's coming up through their ranks.

  1. Mustafina has sadly pulled out of the World Cup. Haven't heard anyhing about the reasons though.

    1. Thanks for that, hadn't heard and then I found it on Full Twist eventually. I'd be inclined to think they're just pacing her.

  2. There are also interviews with Lexie, Simone and Katelyn. :)

Did you watch Livchikova's PT video? What she performed badly did well in comp and the well done skills did in PT fell in comp lol
and I think Ohashi can only be a two events specialist as I think she will have to put most of her efforts to deal with these issues on bars and beam and then have no time to upgrade her FX and VT to be a competitive AAer.
I think Irina Alexeeva can't afford this beam routine now but her performance was still good though. And she is so tall as a 11-year-old girl! That isn't good for her I think.

It's a pity we can't see Russia's new stars in Jesolo but Mai, Asuka and Sasada will represent Japan which is really a good news to me!

Aliya's withdrawn from LRSY is a shame as well but I'm not very disappointed as I don't want her leg got too much pressure from too many comps these months. I think we can definitely see her in EC and Universiade :)

Btw, did you watch the videos from Nadia Comaneci Invitational? Rebeca has so much potential on floor. Those tumbling seems very easy to her and most importantly, both her twisting and tumbling form is PRETTY! I like that haha. And Asiana competed waterdowned routines but got high scores was good for her as well. (I love Asi very much haha.)

    1. Ah you beat me to my update. I discovered the Comaneci meet videos late last night but couldn't watch on my phone. Lovely to see Moors right back on form, and Rebeca looking strong as ever. She's my favourite junior. She looks like she can throw double double, laid out double double, 3.5 twist and arabian double pike- the HEIGHT she gets! And yes, I love how clean she is. I was thrilled to discover Asiana at last year's Junior Nationals..especially her beam, which I haven't seen yet from this meet. Great to watch on floor too. And then I woke up to more USAG videos. Simone just seems like such a sweetheart.

Yes I saw that. I want to see her Brno routine at Euros and hopefully Worlds. It's incredible when she hits everything! Though Chantysha Netteb is coming up strong with similar powerful beam front tumbling. I'm not sure what direction Ohashi will go. I think she does risk burning out if she concentrates on AA, whereas as UB/BB she complements the powerhouses perfectly. Especially since she is the only new senior decent on those events. Valeri paced Nastia correctly who also turned senior just too late for the quad, just because Bross was not does not mean Ohashi is headed the same way. Hopefully not.

I did think that series was a bit too ambitious for Irina. Impressive though, but she doesn't need it yet. Is she elite?? I cannot find her scores from qualifying.

Oooo I didn't hear about Japan's Jesolo lineup! Excellent! Not just Mai and Asuka, eternal favourites, but Sasada who has not been seen in a long while- she was struggling with growth if I remember correctly. It would be great if she can nail her beam mount but if it's a struggle and she has concentrated more on the interior of the routine which I found a bit lacking before, then that's fine too. I was away for the weekend so I'm still catching up on news!

    2. I think Chantysha Netteb will need more time to develop front skills combination as it isn't as easy as performing a single front tumbling. Really hope that Livchikova can shine at least this Euros! (WC is too far to say now especially I think her recovery from ACL wasn't as full as Aliya's :( )

Good luck to Ohashi!! That's all I can say about her now. And Valeri please don't make wrong decisions to your promising gymnasts again! :(

Hmm...sorry I don't know whether she had reached elite level.

I found Japen's lineup to Jesolo from someone's Weibo and they were translated to Chinese so I can't tell you other gymnasts name in English. Have you found the website offered full lineup? And yes, Sasada's routine was a bit ordinary except for that mount. She missed many comps so I look forward to her performance! Whether Asuka's injury will affect her a lot and if Mai can hold her full difficulty routines are what I really look forward to as well.

    3. BTW, your new colorful banner is GREAT :)

    4. Yes I'm really hoping to see Livchikova do well this year. That's a good point, she also probably did not have the top class surgeon Aliya had. She's usually quite heavily strapped still. Hopefully Chantysha will nail it at Euros..I'd be very confident she'll be there..since she has a lot of attack on beam.

Aha, I suspected when I couldn't find it anywhere that this info is in another language. There is basically no info on it except Russia are gone. USA will be naming their girls soon, hopefully all other competitors will be known then so I'll do it all at once. I really really really hope Japan's lineup is true. I'm a bit surprised to see Sasada instead of Wakana Inoue or Risa Konishi..but maybe they are just testing her and the others have enough assignments already. I hope to see Wakana's bars several times this year anyway.

Mai's bars have improved a lot. She should be fully recovered from her injury last year and be much more adjusted to growth. I've no doubt she'll do a double layout, double double and triple on floor...I would be extremely suprised if her monster training passes were unleashed that early though. She has a DTY, good bars, and a lovely beam. Asuka is super strong as well, love her beam so much.

Thank you! I get really bored of the typical collage blog headers, but my last one was really poor. This one will be permanent.

    5. the post also says that maybe this lineup will be changed but I think Mai and Asuka will definitely compete :)
did you got the roster of World Cup in Tokyo? (from FIG XD)
HQS(!!!!) and SCS will compete! Amazing that Huang will be there but I doubt she has been back to good competitive form so I won't hold out much hope on her haha. I really look forward to Shang's routines after winter camp! Asuka will compete as well. That's GREAT <3 (love Asuka so much:P)

    6. Yes I saw it as I was heading out the door! It looks great, most excited to see Asuka and Elisa. Ferrari must be saving up for a castle at this stage with the amount she is competing! Good to see USA on it, they're branching out internationally this year. I'll add it.

To be honest, I'm a little annoyed to see HQS. I love her on floor, and she can be awesome elsewhere...key word..can be. She's had so many chances and I'd prefer to see Zeng Siqi, Wu Liufang or Huang Huidan getting more international experience. Excited for SCS though!

      Delete
    7. Yes! I love love love Siqi. She's so exquisite on floor and beam. Huang Huidan's beam is excellent as well, although I think Siqi's aero series is cleaner than Huidan's.

      Delete
    8. Siqi is the best beam worker they have- and that's saying a lot. I'd like to see her gradually up her difficulty without pushing it too fast. She also has Li Ya's old mount in the training video posted a week or two back- straddle to side split, which is gorgeous.

      Delete
    9. Glad to see USA will attend other world cups as that means more US gumnasts can get the chance to show on international scene. :)
I can't agree with you more, Catherine. HQS has wasted too many chances which other gymnasts(like WLF) really want to got and proof themselves. This year I prefer to see SCS, LNN, HHD, ZSQ, LYT etc. who have entered senior stage but had no chance to shine before.
YJN of course is one of my favorite among current members but we will never know whether she recovers well until Chinese Nationals where she must attend. If she is fine, there is always a spot for her as I think before 2015 China won't have any gymnast who can beat HEALTHY Jinnan. And Sixin have to fight for a spot with Siqi and Nina as they are all beam specialist.
(Sorry for not counting Siqi as a AAer because her bar is too weak and only has normal FX and VT. I hope her coach won't force her to be an AAer just because China need two gymnasts to compete in AA final. She has had too many injuries that had caused her not to be trained in normal system. If they want Siqi to be put on "the champion wall", beam is definitely her only chance.)
WLF... if she can perform more hit routines, maybe she can make a try to fight for a spot as a bar/beam specialist especially her bar is great when she hit, I like SCS's or HHD's though. :P

Got the news? Andreea Munteanu, Andreea Iridon, Laura Jurca, Paula Tudorache will attend International Gymnix. Hope we can see some new skills from them. (I can't wait to see Iridon's bar routine!) Junior is always promising haha :P

    10. Yeah I think I see ZSQ maybe as a DLL type? Except not as strong, yet. Sixin has a long way to go to return to her 2010 form judging by the last training video where she looked extremely sluggish with bad form. I'd like to see her get there. Siqi is more useful than Nina. I think she works in a team of LYT, SCS, HHD and WLF...I know I have to knock one off for the upcoming worlds team. And she used to have a DTY and can presumably get that back. I hope SCS can sharpen up her form on bars a bit- it's my favourite Chinese bars right now.

I hope a well rested Yao Jinnan can make a great comeback. I heard she has gotten her DLO back on floor.

Yep- although there's also another lineup floating around from romgym with Asiana Peng in place of Munteanu. Either way, fabulous team. I was gutted not to see Blendea but word is she is still getting back into comp shape after injury. Yes- and Iridon is training a Memmel on beam! Russia's team is rumoured to have Maria Bodareva, Polina Spirina and Anastasia Dmitrieva. Can't wait for everything to be confirmed.

    1. It doesn't translate well. It's been brought up on IG that a fluff piece mentioned she had a heart condition as a child, so it's likely related. It's definite that she was under stress and there's a lot of problems at the new facility and that she suffered a heart attack. Nothing else is clear- how long she was being treated, etc. I'm waiting for a correct translation from the excellent rewritingrussiangymnastics or from Rachael- whatshouldgymfanscallme.

  6. lol everybody needs to take a leaf from Oksana's book
    1. Do it for the sport and not the fame (not that there's anything wrong with chasing after fame/money in principle- I understand the need to make a living and not kill ones body doing the hardest sport ever- but it just makes gymfans appreciate the former type more :)
    2. Keep healthy (idk how she does it- do you know her training schedule? Maybe it's very well paced)
    3. Hold multiple citizenships for non-Top4 gymnastics countries.

How often does one coach and train at the same time. The only one I can think of is Ponor coaching for a while post-Athens and then announcing her comeback, but even then, i don't believe she did both simultaneously.

I'll pray for Zamo. :( And Komova, of course. And is McKayla back in the gym? It seems that all her teammates are?

    1. Oksana has been through the mill injury-wise, but I think she's gone a few years now injury-free. There was an interview with her from maybe a year or two back, it was mainly showing how in awe the other girls are of her in her gym and also seemed to show that's she sensible with her training- not overdoing hard landings etc.

Yes, her vaulting has deteriorated substantially and she's usable but not great on the other events..but still far and away the best gymnast for Uzbekistan.

On the WAG side, most retire too early for it to become a thing. There is speculation that Anna Pavlova does it. I would imagine it would only be prevalent among girls not on their national team..so they need to pave their own way to continue.

Komova's problem is muscle strain. She's currently at home and won't be back until after Russian Championships. They're not too fussed about her prognosis, but want to be definitely sure she's fully healed from everything and ready to go. McKayla is..there's a photo of her there in the 'soviets chomping caviar' post from last month. Her own instagram does as well. She is conditioning. Kyla never really left the gym, Gabby ruled out competing this year and Aly and Jordyn both stated they will be back in the gym soon, but I'm not sure if they started yet or not.

      Delete
    2. With all the talented juniors, I don't think any of the Olympic members will be needed in future. According to Marta's theory, everyone is replaceable-not that I agree with her, but she's the boss. Maybe Kyla will remain, just because of her bars. I think she will end up having a similar career as Sloan.

      Delete
    3. I'd be surprised if Aly and Jordyn made major teams in the next few years. You never know..but with their strengths, it would be much harder to keep up with the plethora of new talent. McKayla is a bit different as a specialist..if she gets a new vault then she should be without a doubt in the worlds team, since she's the greatest vaulter by far USA have ever had, and deserves her own. The individual worlds are a good thing for her, if she actually is able to be ready in time for it. Kyla and Gabby both are vaulable for their beam and bars and especially if they upgrade, USA is still weak there. I know Simone, Lexie and Ebee cover Jordyn and Aly's strengths and they will have girls with 2 strong vaults to possibly edge out McKayla if she's in the running at all this year...but yes, there are slots for beam/bars girls.

      Delete
    4. but aly has been so rock solid... it would be interesting to see if she still has that insane consistency if she starts training again. marta loves her for that, and i wonder if that would play a part in her being seen as more desirable than one of the young ones. she's different than say, alicia, who was trying to be the 'veteran'.

the talent pool in the US is just so damn huge they dont need aly, but would marta maybe want her anyway?

      Delete
    5. Well, I've seen the Karoyis since the 80's and I can say one thing- they don't have any favorites. Everyone is treated like a prop, unless one is a bar specialist. Aly's fate could've been better if she was a little bit more consistent on beam. Aly and Jordyn's floor can be covered by younger and fresher Simone, Lexie and McKayla Skinner. Remember how last year's team was successful without any veterans?
I just don't see Gabby coming back to gym after all the "activities" she's been doing. She might try to come back right before the Olympics like Nastia.
I know that they need someone for beam. Sarah Finnegan, perhaps? I like her very much.

      Delete
    6. Hmmm, I think Nastia is a good example of a pet. I think though there are instances of their least favourites moreso than favourites in general. They did not like Shannon or Chellsie for instance. I don't really buy into them being evil overlords with hatelists or anything, the above is just the impression I have gotten.

Gabby would still be valuable if she comes back in 2014/2015. She has the frame of someone who would not find it difficult to be back in full training really.

Finnegan is injured, not sure when she'll be back. Definitely a place for her given how unusuable Ebee and Lexie's beams are.

      Delete
    7. Yeah, I think my previous comment was bit too acrimonious. Sorry, I didn't have my morning coffee yesterday:(
I don't like Karolyis mainly because it seems like they don't much care about their athletes' longevity. That's just my opinion, though.
I hope Sarah can recover in time. I was so disappointed when I found out about the injury! Do you see any future beam finalist other than Sarah and Katelyn? Although I like every GAGE gymnasts, I'm not a fan of Maddie's beam, especially after last year's Visa championships. She began to do this weird "twitch" before her flic flac combination... Maybe it has something to do with her injury:(

      Delete
    8. Yes, Bailie. She has upgrades for this year on beam (and bars, and floor). Her beam is so clean that she will not need Katelyn's difficulty. I also have my eye on Polina and Nia for beam (though I think Nia is more of an all-arounder and I'm just a little blinded by the fact Li Li is one of Nia's coaches..)

Much as I love Sarah, her landings were already very low plenty of times last year so I hope she can improve as her difficulty looked a little much for her.

      Delete
  7. I don't think we'll be seeing a video from Maddie yet as she hasn't been to camps recently due to her injury (she tore her meniscus I think). But I really enjoyed the ones of the other girls. I hope Kyla can come to American Cup with some good upgrades especially on bars and floor. Katelyn is so well spoken and comfortable infront of the camera and I love that we got to see a bit more of Simone, she's just the sweetest! And hopefully this means Marta sees her as a big contender over the next quad.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, hopefully when Maddie is recovered though. I'm not sure where she will fit in but I want USAG to recognise her as much as the others. I hope Kyla can get her floor to approach 6.0, and her bars and beam a few tenths higher. I hope she just does the DTY though, it's lovely. I'm hoping that too- I don't want Simone to get lost under Lexie and Ebee! She is the more complete gymnast of the 3, and highly watchable on floor.

      Delete
    2. Yes I really like Simone on floor and she clearly has the power to upgrade. Her bars/beam will take some work if she wants to be an aa contender in the future, like she mentioned in the video. And I definitely prefer to watch her instead of Lexie and Ebee!

Yeah me too. Not sure when camp is but it should be a good one- annoucements for SCAM, Jesolo, Germany and probably the Tokyo Cup place too. And hopefully the incredibly small Junior NT will be added to.
